Message Passing, is a fascinating subject. One of the early prominent project was/is MPI ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Message_Passing_Interface ). So many great concepts and high-level abstractions are developed by the outstanding researchers in MPI. NATS, probably serves in the era of the "larger" Internet (as MPI mostly designed for local clusters).
