I'm not sure what you mean with connectivity. I bought mine about 9 years ago, and since then I just use it as my cellphone, I think 4G or LTE. It doesn't get new OS versions, but it gets updates from time to time. It's not clear to me whats being updated, maybe its just the terms of service... . Maybe it's outdated, but to say it's a brick is not exactly accurate, it works fine. I replaced the battery 2 or 3 years ago with one I bought from iFixit for 50 Euros including some tools.

How you deal with connectivity, since the newest system it can use is iOS 15, while Apple ID needs iOS 16.2 or later?

Thanks! I was under some impression that Apple ID is needed for these to work properly.
By "connectivity" I meant like syncing Photos with MacBook.
