I enjoy a good-natured ribbing of the "youths these days" as much as any generation, but I don't think I've ever actually encountered someone doing this.
Gen-X has their own version: it used to drive me nuts when I’d say ‘thank you’ to someone and their response was ‘uh-huh’. In what world is that a response? No ‘you’re welcome’?
Millennial checking in: At this point I'd probably fall over in shock if I managed to get an "uh huh" from someone.
Was actually talking about this with my kid yesterday and I decided it would be fun to just dig in and return the stare and see how long it takes for them to break (if they even do!)
Ah, that. When we did that back in the day, the Old Ones, the ones who made us, called that the "deer in the headlights" expression.
