Original title "Iberdrola must open its books as CMP seeks greater profits in ongoing rate case, Maine utility regulator says" compressed to fit within title limits.
"Excellent news in Maine on the utility regulation front. Central Maine Power, owned by Spanish multi-national Iberdrola, must open up its books and explain why it is demanding a return on equity of 9.8%. Its parent company’s annual financial report for 2025 approximated the cost of capital at “6.26% for its U.S. electric and gas assets, which include Central Maine Power.” That’s a big deal, because it is the first time a regulator is actually able to see the real way that utilities calculate their costs. Nearly every utility in America gets a 9-11% return on equity, cutting that to near 6% would be earth-shaking in lots of positive ways."
