When you don't have any insulin, your body goes into a state of diabetic keto-acidosis (DKA). While in this state, sugar builds up in your blood, but does not enter your cells. Your liver dumps glucose into the bloodstream which causes dehydration, as the kidneys work overtime to clean the blood. The body eventually uses an alternate metabolic pathway to produce energy which dumps byproducts into the blood which cause it to turn acidic among other things.
Speaking from experience, severe DKA is extremely uncomfortable. The problem is in your blood, so you feel a constant and extreme discomfort everywhere in the body, there's no body part that you can focus on where it isn't happening. You become extremely tired and lethargic and also irritable. You get angry and panicked and cognition slows down so you don't feel like yourself. You are very hungry and very thirsty but nothing you eat or drink alleviates the sensation. You also feel as though you cannot breathe enough to sate your body, so your breathing becomes faster and shallower.
It's difficult for me to imagine anything worse than dying of DKA. Maybe being lit on fire? That's short though, a death by DKA happens over hours or days. The cruelty here is spectacular.
Insulin is on the WHO essential medication list. The type of insulin that could alleviate these symptoms is cheap and widely available. There is absolutely no excuse here. Every doctor and nurse knows how to treat this and stop this kind of suffering.
Even setting aside the very real risk of life-ending ketoacidosis, high enough blood sugar is pure suffering in itself.
Many aspects to it. The nuances are horrific; For instance. the amygdala is wired with blood glucose sensing capability and processes blood sugar alterations as foundational threat markers. Directly.
It is known that elevated blood sugar nukes sensory nerves and capillaries.
This is torture. Literal. physical torture.

This is a good question. It's worth noting that the US forces did not in fact uniformly liberate every concentration camps prisoner: they left those incarcerated for being homosexual. So even back then the lines were blurrier than commonly taught.
It makes no difference whether he is an American citizen, he is still a Japanese. American citizenship does not necessarily determine loyalty... But we must worry about the Japanese all the time until he is wiped off the map.[...]I am determined that if they have one drop of Japanese blood in them, they must go to camp.
This era is a lesson in the nature of power and what people will do to get it. The lesson is: liberal democracy must be continuously defended with positive action.
In the US, both political parties work for Capital, not the workers and do not provide positive action. This leaves an opportunity for fascists to be elected to power by campaigning on solving the problems that arise from unregulated capitalism. What else are voters going to do? Keep voting the a political system that does nothing for them materially? The counter is a government that delivers for citizens. That means: low food and energy prices, healthcare, job security and worker protections, housing affordability, etc. (And I don't want to hear any quibbling cop outs from liberals or centrists or the vote blue crowd about how Kamala was the only sane choice who promised to keep GDP growth above 5% or cancel some modicum of means-tested student loan debt etc.)
So, that's how you get concentration camps after once liberating them.
As a libertarian, to me the choice was between an uninspiring milquetoast pilot who would at least fly the plane (even though I've never liked the heading) versus the gremlin on the wing trying to bring the plane down. Part of me does have to wonder if I were twenty years younger would I have voted gremlin. But the reality that so many people did eagerly vote for the gremlins (and continue to cheer them on) really shows how entitled and out of touch we've become - our political system most certainly does provide for us materially, even as it grinds our self-determination to dust to better extract our economic value. But good times create weak men, and all that.
AFAICT the motte is enforcing immigration law. The bailey is a turning off of any sort of human empathy based on "they shouldn't have broken the law".
Personally I'm mostly ambivalent about immigration enforcement (especially with the current state of the law), but strongly against concentration/torture camps. It's sad that the latter has to be stated as an explicit position these days, rather than still being the shared American value that it had been.
Sure, I don't disagree with your thrust. But I was talking about how "people think this is ok", in other words how they justify supporting it to themselves. I'd say racism is more part of the bailey, something that also gets rationalized away, the quiet part (now often out loud, especially in online spaces), etc.
These poor people marginalized by politics trying to find a better life. I just don't understand how people can be so far removed from this problem and not feel a profound sense discontent with the world that we enabled this to happen. What's worse is the children affected by this too. It's hard to believe the world can have billionaires and yet also people dying from lack of food, medicine and shelter. There is enough to go around we simply don't want to change. Worser still those that work for these systems are often protected, heralded and celebrated even.
Guantanamo was just a penetration test. With such list of horribly crimes and Antiamerican behavior, if citizens don't decide to dismantle the Republican party forever with a "so long and thanks for all the fishy collusion with the enemies of US", this will be a carnage for USA. What more needs to do this party to be fired?
The citizens need to teach politicians a very firm and hard lesson. This ICE people assassinating people at will must be prosecuted and punished before they are allowed to coup and kill your own children in a stupid civil war.
Several new parties based in real republican values but with none of the larvae and spies should had been created from scratch one year ago. In Europe a democracy doing 1% of this would be on general strike.
How can we be better documenting the perpetrators involved here for our own Nuremberg trials? Narrative articles are obviously necessary for highlighting the moment, but seem too impermanent to actually prosecute these crimes against humanity.
Speaking to lack of insulin here.

Yes.

From liberating concentration camps to running them. How tf did this happen? And why do people think this is ok?
This is a good question. It's worth noting that the US forces did not in fact uniformly liberate every concentration camps prisoner: they left those incarcerated for being homosexual. So even back then the lines were blurrier than commonly taught.
The US was running some at the same time back then too, so honestly is it that surprising?

This is a fig leaf. The motivation is racism. (Trump has deported up to 1M people so far the vast majority of whom have no criminal record.)

Eh the majority were liberated by the soviets.
Detention centers are run by for-profit companies--caring for prisoners would eat into their bottom line. Seems obvious.

American exceptionalism at it’s finest.
